A. External valve view in SEM. The valve face is distinctly concentrically undulate, and spines occur at every interfascicle. Below every spine is the external opening of a marginal strutted process (msp). These openings appear as simple pores with a very slight siliceous rim surrounding the pore. Also present on the valve mantle is the external opening of the labiate process (lp), which appears as a simple pore located under a spine. Scale bar equals five microns.
